Farrington Lake Middlesex County

Kayak on a blue lake with green trees along the shore of Farrington Lake

Enjoyable paddling on a quiet lake tucked abroad in suburbia.

Spot enough of herons and other birds forth a lake lined with trees and a few houses.

Miles: ~8.0. Unabridged length of lake. Lake Size: 290 acres. Average Depth: 6', max depth: 12'.

  • Nearby kayak: D&R Canal Kayak – Blackwells Mills; Carnegie Lake Kayak.
  • Nearby hikes: Farrington Lake Trail, Republic of ireland Brook, Davidson'south Mill Pond; Woods Brook Trail; Van Dyke Farm; Tamarack Hollow.

Our two cents:

The due south end is narrower and shallower than the north terminate (and more interesting in our opinion), simply is more afflicted by depression water. However, the entire lake is a pleasant and easy paddle.

Relatively placidity surface area but some power lines and houses that edge the lake are visible, with the associated noise of mowers etc.

Route noise, especially along the southern section. Lots of fishing boats only it'south electric motors only and there is room to spread out.

Plenty of wild animals – herons, other birds, turtles. A solid choice for those in central Jersey, just non something you demand to drive far for.

Updated: six/2022 – Refreshed page; re-kayaked north one-half.

Launch:

The small launch area at Church and Riva is shown below. It's a murky and muddy gradual entry. The Hardenburg Lane lot/ launch expanse is bigger but is sometimes filled with boat trailers.

The Route:

We recollect of Farrington Lake as two sections, split at the Church and Riva lot, and usually practice i one-half or the other as the whole lake is a bit much to do at once.

The lake is orientated northeast-southwest merely we're merely using north/right and south/left from the launches for simplicity.

North/correct from Church & Riva lot:

Goes towards the widest area. Passes a dock for a solar day army camp, houses nestled in the trees, and some power lines.

The bridge on Hardenburg Ln can be paddled under and nosotros've never seen the water loftier enough that information technology's not possible. Just past this is a strip of land bulging out into the lake where there are submerged pylons. These are easily navigated through.

They aren't visible when the h2o level is loftier but there are metal rods stuck in them to make them easier to avert.

In that location is a cove with walls in forepart of it, and the lake ends at a splillway/dam. The spillway has a decent drib off so stay clear of it.

Tall green trees in the distance reflected into a flat lake

South/left from Church & Riva lot:

Immediately paddle under the Church Lane bridge and into a narrower surface area that is filled with lily pads.

This continues to narrow, with overhanging branches, passing under another bridge.

It eventually becomes too shallow to continue, only curt of entering Davidsons Millpond.

This expanse is much wilder in feel than the more than open sections in the north of the lake.

When the water level is low, the 2nd span may be catchy equally at that place are rocks or cement pieces under information technology.
